UNICC has successfully concluded the 7th Annual Common Secure Conference, held from 27 to 30 October 2025, bringing together over 100 cybersecurity professionals from 41 UN organizations for three days of in-depth discussions, peer learning, and cross-agency collaboration. This year’s conference highlighted the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in both cybersecurity challenges and solutions.

From AI threat modeling to the security of AI-generated code, participants explored the challenges and opportunities AI brings to digital defence. “Artificial intelligence holds immense promise but also introduces new complexities that we should address together and collaboratively across the UN system,” said Tima Soni, Chief of UNICC’s Cybersecurity Division. “Let’s embrace AI across all areas of cybersecurity to enhance the ability to protect against current and future cyberthreats effectively.”

The conference examined the complex challenge of securing both legacy technologies and emerging AI-powered solutions. At the same time, the integration of AI introduces new layers of risk, particularly when built on infrastructures not originally designed for such technologies. This context demands strategic attention, balancing the need to protect long-standing assets with the evolving nature of AI-driven threats.

Key sessions also addressed other trends in the evolving threat landscape facing the UN system. They explored strategies and approaches organizations use to defend against cyberthreats, including discussions on strategies for effective zero-trust transformations, hybrid threats, advanced persistent threats, and a live tabletop exercise titled “Chaos in the Age of AI.”

Moreover, leading partners, including Google, CrowdStrike, and Cloudflare, shared security insights and joined discussions, enriching the exchange of knowledge and perspectives.

The Common Secure Conference, launched by UNICC in 2019, continues to serve as the trusted platform for UN system cybersecurity practitioners to exchange threat intelligence, build capacity, and foster a culture of mutual accountability and preparedness across the UN family.
