UNICC provides real-world project experience for students through university capstone projects

Through its collaboration with universities and academic institutions around the globe, UNICC has shown its commitment to empowering young people with professional experience while benefiting from project support from students in an increasingly diversified workforce, enhancing the organization’s knowledge base and gaining access to new theoretical and technical knowledge and resources.

The University of Salento, New York University (NYU) Stern School of Business and Valencia Polytechnic University (UPV) have recently partnered with UNICC for student capstone projects in data science.

UNICC proposed several challenging data use-case projects for students in applied Master’s programs who were looking to gain hands-on experience working on real-world projects.

In the case of each university, teams of 3-5 students worked with subject matter experts from various UNICC teams, including Data and Analytics, Project Management and Cybersecurity, for 10 weeks to augment the data science theory taught in the classroom environment with real-world data-related challenges UNICC is tackling on behalf of its Clients and Partner Organizations worldwide.

Student teams had to define the problems, review a range of available open-source tools that can be integrated into the projects. Then they had to design and develop the solutions, all while gaining valuable insights into the demands and responsibilities of the working world.

There is a huge potential of open-source data that is out there in the public domain and can be harnessed to make an impact. We need strong data scientists to work with it and to solve the complex problems the world is facing.

UNICC in this way has been helping students develop and improve their wide range of skills, including strategic thinking, problem-solving, research analysis, effective communication, problem-solving and teamwork while benefiting from having a new perspective applied to its projects.

UNICC – University Salento Capstone Project: Incident Management

The student team developed a Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution that can automatically identify, mitigate, categorize and predict security incidents.

UNICC – NYU Capstone Project: Detection of COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation on Twitter

The student team developed a flexible, Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution that can automatically detect where misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines is spread and what kind of misinformation is discussed. They focused on Twitter data, where the highest volume of conversations about COVID-19 have taken place. This project involved online data collection and verification of the reported/collected information.

UNICC – UPV Capstone Project: Closure Reports Lessons Learned Extraction and Tagging

The student team developed a Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution that can extract lessons learned from closure reports to support better programming and decision-making within UNICC.

UNICC’s participation in these capstone projects speaks to its commitment to SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals.
