Position Description

Purpose of the Position:
The purpose of this post is to provide support in the administration of the UNICC’s Virtualization infrastructure as well as customer dedicated infrastructures.
Objectives of the Programme:
The objective of the Centre is to provide trusted ICT services and digital business solutions to its Clients and Partner Organizations.
Main duties and responsibilities:
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the Platform services Team Lead (OPBO) in the Platform and Infrastructure Operations Unit, within the Operations Division (OP). The incumbent will perform the following duties but not limited to:
Design and Implementation:
- Configure, install , and maintain Linux operating systems across different distributions, including Red Hat, Oracle Linux, and Ubuntu
- Under guidance of the team lead, set up and implement solutions to meet the organization’s Linux needs
System Administration:
- Perform regular system updates, patch management, and configuration changes across various Linux distributions
- Ensure the security of the Linux infrastructure by implementing best practices and maintaining compliance with industry standards
Monitoring and Optimization:
- Monitor the performance and health of Linux systems
- Perform performance tuning and optimization of Linux environments
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks and performance issues proactively
Troubleshooting and Support:
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for issues related to Linux environments
- Resolve incidents and problems, ensuring minimal downtime and impact on business operations
Automation and Scripting:
- Use and maintain scripts and automation tools to streamline administrative tasks
- Implement automation solutions for provisioning, configuration management, and monitoring
Collaboration and Communication:
- Under guidance of the team lead, collaborate with other IT teams, stakeholders, and vendors to plan and execute Linux-related projects
- Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders, providing updates on project status, issues, and resolutions
- Following the unit’s best practices, provide training and guidance to junior team members and other staff as needed
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in Linux technologies and best practices
- Evaluate new technologies and tools that could enhance the Linux infrastructure
Project Management:
- Participate in Linux-related projects
- Manage project timelines, resources, and risks effectively
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of the Linux infrastructure and related processes
- Prepare and present regular reports on the performance, capacity, and health of the Linux environment
Other:
- Provide other ad hoc support either within the team or in other teams as required – this includes the participation in special projects or support to service delivery for short period of time on a part-time or full-time basis upon request from the senior management
- The incumbent may be required to act as Officer-In-Charge of the team, during the absence of the Team Leader
Recruitment Profile
Experience and Skills required:
Essential:
- Minimum eight (8) years of relevant IT work experience with Linux system administration. A completed university degree from an accredited institution will be counted towards minimum work experience requirements
- Proven track record of working with multiple Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Oracle Linux, and Ubuntu
- Proficiency in managing and administering Linux servers, including installation, configuration, and maintenance
- Strong knowledge of Linux file systems, networking, and security
- Expertise with scripting languages such as Python and Ansible for automation and task management
- Experience with performance tuning and optimization of Linux environments
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex Linux-related issues
- Experience with patch management and system updates
Desirable:
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
- Experience with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
Education:
Essential:
- Successful completion of secondary school education or its equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in IT
Desirable:
- Relevant certifications such as Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Oracle Linux Certified Implementation Specialist, or similar Linux certifications
- ITIL, ISO20000, PRINCE2 certifications
Languages:
- English: Expert knowledge is required
- Knowledge of the local language of the Duty Station will be an advantage

Eligibility:
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. Compensation:
Annual Salary Estimation (net of tax at single rate):
- Valencia, Spain: EUR 48,769
