Purpose of the Position:

The Associate Data Engineer will be an integral part of the UNICC Data & Analytics team and will support the UNICC Data Strategic Plan through the use of Cloud based solutions and analytics. The incumbent will provide engineering solutions and insights from the initiative data sets to create additional value / opportunities with ad hoc responsibilities supporting various client partners of UNICC.

This position will be part of a highly collaborative and growing team of data experts, who are taking on today’s biggest, most complex challenges within the UN system using the latest data and advanced analytics technologies. UNICC promotes career development whenever possible. The incumbent of this position will therefore be exposed to roles such as Data Engineer, Data Modeler or Data Architect covering all aspects of Data including Data Management, Data Governance and Data Migration.

Objectives of the Programme:

The objective of the Centre is to provide trusted ICT services and digital business solutions to its Clients and Partner Organizations.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The incumbent will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the IT Officer – Data Science within the Digital Delivery Division and in close collaboration with the Data & Analytics team. The incumbent could be requested to do any other tasks of similar level in related fields. The incumbent will perform the following duties:

  • Data Pipeline Development:
    • Create and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for moving and transforming data between systems
    • Participate in the development and optimization of data pipelines to ensure efficient and timely data processing
  • Data Modelling:
    • Under guidance, design data models to support the organization’s business requirements
    • Implement and manage database schema and structures
  • Data Integration:
    • Integrate data from various sources and formats into a unified and coherent system
    • Ensure data consistency and integrity across different data sources
  • Data Warehousing:
    • Build and manage data warehouses for storage and retrieval of large volumes of structured and unstructured data
  • Data Quality:
    • Implement data quality checks and ensuring data accuracy
  • Data Security:
    • Implement security measures to protect sensitive data
  • Performance Tuning:
    • Monitor and optimize data pipeline processing performance
    • Identify and resolve bottlenecks in data pipelines
  • Automation and Scalability:
    • Automate repetitive tasks to improve efficiency
    • Contribute to the design of systems that can scale horizontally to handle growing data volumes
  • Tool and Technology Selection:
    • Evaluate and select appropriate tools and technologies for data storage, processing, and analysis
    • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements
  • Documentation:
    • Create and maintain documentation for data processes, systems, and architectures
    • Participate in the knowledge transfer within the team
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
    • Set up monitoring systems to track data pipeline performance
    • Identify and resolve issues in a timely manner

Recruitment Profile

Experience and Skills required:

Essential:

  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant IT experience, with a focus in data engineering, business intelligence, information systems, or another analytical field
  • Working experience with Azure cloud solutions, specially with Data services such as Azure Data Factory (ADF), Databricks, Azure synapse Spark pools, Azure SQL Databases, Azure Analysis Services and PowerBI.
  • Experience in data analytics and programming in languages such as R or Python
  • Experience programming in scripting languages such as bash or PowerShell
  • Working knowledge of data analytics, cloud computing, business intelligence and visualizations
  • Working knowledge of Agile and DevOps methodologies
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines specifically for Data & Analytics solutions

Desirable:

  • Experience with any other cloud provider(AWS, GCP) is a strong plus
  • Good understanding of data modelling activities to capture and model data requirements, business rules, and logical and physical models
  • Experience in Machine Learning and related fields
  • Experience using M365 tools for Data Analysis and Reporting

Education*:

Essential:

  • First university degree in Computer Science, Information Management Systems, Data Science or related fields

Desirable:

  • Advanced university degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Data Science or related fields
  • One or more of the following Azure certifications:
    • Azure Data Engineer Associate
    • Azure Database Administrator Associate
    • Azure Enterprise Data Analyst Associate

Languages:

  • English: Expert knowledge is required
  • French or Spanish: Beginner knowledge is desirable

Compensation:

Annual Salary Estimation (net of tax at single rate):

  • Brindisi, (Italy) including post adjustment (28,5% on January 2024): US$ 49,502
